I've been running this website since 1997 and have signed up to lots of programs, some of them paid, some didn't. I started with the US programs, but because this is a UK website some programs didn't generate a single clickthru. Of the ones that did pay, the US currency cheques were so small they weren't worth cashing.
Things have really changed now, there's plenty of UK affiliate marketing sites around and a lot of site owners actually make a living from them. Here is a list of the major players...
This affiliate site has the best user interface of any site in the UK. I've made a lot of money with this one now. Some of their partners pay per lead which is rare for an affiliate program these days. Pay per lead can make a lot of money for a high traffic website. If you run a financial website Loan applications are paying from £20 - £60! They're just looking for decent websites that get a fair bit of traffic. Very quick and easy to sign up.

Google Adsense on your site can be very lucrative. Generally Google
Adsense works well on high traffic sites. As an affiliate you get paid
a percentage of the revenue for each click. An example of an Adsense
advert is shown below. The Advert is based on the words google can see
on your site. The links below should lead to more affiliate networks.
This network is good if
you can sell gadgets, they have signed up companies such as Firefox, and
iwantoneofthose and boysstuff. Whatsmore, they pay monthly. They use cookies
to track the sales which means if a visitor returns to the site upto 30
days later you still get the commission.

Commission Junction
This was the first network I signed up with when it was a US only site.
Fortunately they now have a dedicated UK network with some big name merchants.
The others networks have learnt a lot from these people. Turn your traffic
into profit
Affiliate Window has been going a while now and they have lots of great merchants. This is another good quality ad network. I've made reasonable amounts of money, but mainly from my 2nd tier affiliates so sign up now and make me some more!
If you have a media rich site this program could earn you a lot of dollars. Don't worry though all of those dollars can be sent directly to your Paypal account where it can be easily exchanged for stirling.
